Video streaming
To embed video on your website, you need to understand the basic types of video files. What type of video file to use? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each file type? These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself before placing a video on your website.
There are three basic types of video files on the Internet. MPEG, AVI and Quicktime. I believe the Quicktime file type is the most popular because many of the major entertainment and news sites use it exclusively on their websites.
AVI is a Windows-based video format, but it is not the most popular due to audio and video compatibility and synchronization issues. Since the Quicktime format can be used on Windows or Macintosh computers, the AVI video file type is losing popularity day by day.
The MPEG format is a popular video file type that uses high-quality output to increase its popularity over the QuickTime format. Mpeg is used for video games, CD-ROMs, and other media that require high quality output. One disadvantage of MPEG is that it sacrifices file size to achieve digital quality.
Another disadvantage of MPEG is that you really need time and sophisticated hardware and software to convert regular video to MPEG. And let's not forget that Apple and Macintosh don't support MPEG, which means that if you put MPEG video on your website, Macintosh users won't be able to see it.
QuickTime is by far the most popular video file type developed by Apple for Macintosh users, but it is also compatible with IBM-compatible computers and the Windows operating system. The hardware and software you need to digitize video in quick time is much cheaper than mpeg. So it's very easy and cheap to create a video using the Quicktime format and put it on your website.
